Cape Coast The Elmina Castle Elmina Castle is located in the west-central region of the coast of Ghana, seventy-two miles west of Cape Coast, on the Gulf of Guinea. The first significant European port on the Gold Coast, Elmina grew as a major gold-trading site. In 1482, the Portuguese constructed Fort St. George or Elmina Castle here, the first of its kind in Africa, and the headquarters of European colonists for over 500 years. Much of the town was destroyed in 1872 in a war between the Ashanti and the British over Elmina. The fort, now being restored, still dominates the coastline of Elmina. The town is an important Ghanaian fishing port and a popular tourist resort. |
